pat with expectancy, on a green <strong>grass</strong>y glade. You know<br />

not what is ahead, nor do you want to. Here your " th<strong>in</strong>k-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g <strong>black</strong>" negro moralises once more, and <strong>in</strong>sists that<br />

this track <strong>of</strong> ours is like <strong>the</strong> way and walk <strong>of</strong> life. The<br />

veil that covers <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> futurity is woven by <strong>the</strong> hand<br />

<strong>of</strong> mercy. If you knew a month's happen<strong>in</strong>g ahead, you<br />

would grow grey <strong>in</strong> a s<strong>in</strong>gle night. Day by day <strong>in</strong> this<br />

same cart-wheel rut, however, has a curious eflfect on you<br />

<strong>the</strong> traveller : it gets on your bra<strong>in</strong>, precisely as this<br />

s<strong>in</strong>uous trail has made an equally s<strong>in</strong>uous African. He<br />

gets a twist too. With chameleon consistency <strong>the</strong> negro<br />

has utterly become like his own zigzag path ; it is his<br />

way <strong>of</strong> do<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>in</strong>gs as well as his way <strong>of</strong> walk<strong>in</strong>g. In<br />

speak<strong>in</strong>g—say—this slippery native can only twist <strong>in</strong> and<br />

out <strong>of</strong> an idea precisely as he twists a<strong>long</strong> his path :<br />

" Go<strong>in</strong>g, I went, and speak<strong>in</strong>g, I spoke, and do<strong>in</strong>g, I did,"<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> average formula <strong>of</strong> your wriggly <strong>black</strong>. An<br />

adjacent lion is called a *'dog," and a friend ask<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

friend to dr<strong>in</strong>k beer is vaguely <strong>in</strong>vited to dr<strong>in</strong>k " water."<br />

Hence <strong>the</strong> famous fact that our son <strong>of</strong> Ham will never<br />

come straight to <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t, but hedges and temporises<br />

" meander<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t " he calls it. Depend upon it,<br />

too, this gentleman has got to learn that a straight l<strong>in</strong>e<br />

is <strong>the</strong> shortest <strong>in</strong> morals as <strong>in</strong> ma<strong>the</strong>matics : is not <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

twisted it<strong>in</strong>erary exactly like <strong>the</strong>ir twisted morals ? Why,<br />

for example, is it that your savage prefers to take a <strong>long</strong>,<br />

roundabout way <strong>in</strong> murder<strong>in</strong>g his man, l<strong>in</strong>ger<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

lavish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>est touches <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> art <strong>of</strong> murder on him ?<br />

Kound <strong>the</strong> corner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cook-house you can catch Mr.
