<strong>the</strong> immensity. Into this desolation we plunge to-day,<br />

our <strong>black</strong> guides warn<strong>in</strong>g us that we will be cheaply<br />

out <strong>of</strong> it with four days' hard journey<strong>in</strong>g, water <strong>the</strong> cruel<br />

lack ahead. We are <strong>in</strong> for Zebulun's portion at last<br />

"They shall suck <strong>of</strong> treasures hid <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sand." Thus<br />

spurred on, we cut <strong>of</strong>f our first slice <strong>of</strong> desert <strong>in</strong> a five<br />

hours' journey, lurch<strong>in</strong>g a<strong>long</strong> over tiresome sand, <strong>the</strong><br />

joys <strong>of</strong> a flat-as-a-d<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g-table path quite lost <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

result, still <strong>the</strong>y dig on <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> second hour with plucky<br />

negro pugnacity and breath<strong>in</strong>g as loud as a forge bellows.<br />

That perspiration stream<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sun, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

call " <strong>the</strong> salt melt<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> beef." All our superior<br />

sagacity is scorned, <strong>the</strong> Bihean be<strong>in</strong>g quite sure that if
