reptiles quite coolly commence to nip poor Jumbo's toes,<br />

forgetful <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fact that Jumbo's trunk is Jumbo's glory.<br />

At any rate, Nemesis falls like a bolt from <strong>the</strong> blue, for,<br />

smack<strong>in</strong>g like a <strong>long</strong> whip, down comes that elephant's<br />

trunk, twist<strong>in</strong>g round <strong>the</strong> crocodile's tail, and—tableau !<br />

With one half-shriek, half-squeak, <strong>the</strong> <strong>long</strong> greenish-<br />

yellow croc is sent fly<strong>in</strong>g over <strong>the</strong> marsh—flop<br />

splash ! thirty yards <strong>of</strong>i". That deft tight grip <strong>the</strong> tusker<br />

took <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> huge reptile's tail, and <strong>the</strong> way <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> moon-<br />

light he waved it <strong>the</strong>atrically al<strong>of</strong>t like <strong>the</strong> figure-<strong>of</strong>-eight<br />

smack <strong>of</strong> a whip, doubtless made that crocodile unto <strong>the</strong><br />

third and fourth generation resolve never aga<strong>in</strong> to nibble<br />

at an elephant's toes.<br />

The mannish type <strong>of</strong> woman here even tackles a<br />

crocodile, and Madam Luban is not too f<strong>in</strong>ick<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

choice <strong>of</strong> a weapon. These ladies are quite deft with<br />

<strong>the</strong> short national knife, and two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m attacked a<br />

crocodile <strong>in</strong> best Amazon manner. They had gone down<br />

to <strong>the</strong> fish<strong>in</strong>g-weir to empty <strong>the</strong> wicker baskets when<br />

a lurk<strong>in</strong>g croc shot out at <strong>the</strong>m with a snap. Tak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

advantage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fact that when this beast misses a first<br />

grab he must pause to unlock his teeth, <strong>the</strong>se plucky<br />

women attacked him with <strong>the</strong>ir two short knives and<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ished him <strong>in</strong> a few m<strong>in</strong>utes. But what a weird<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess, <strong>the</strong> <strong>long</strong> yellow crocodile writh<strong>in</strong>g with his<br />

wounds, and snap, snapp<strong>in</strong>g his white teeth <strong>in</strong> chagr<strong>in</strong><br />

The two women flow<strong>in</strong>g with blood yet never a w<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

two paltry penknives do<strong>in</strong>g it all. And all <strong>the</strong> while<br />

yonder is a heron fish<strong>in</strong>g on a sand-spit, chuckl<strong>in</strong>g with
