Commandant heartily agrees with <strong>the</strong> idea; spoil<strong>in</strong>g is<br />

<strong>the</strong> very word, only he makes this poor participle do<br />

double duty—he spoils <strong>the</strong> country by extort<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

spoils. Across <strong>the</strong> way, <strong>the</strong> Mission is a wakeful witness<br />

<strong>of</strong> it all, but this Chefe scorns <strong>in</strong>tervention, pour<strong>in</strong>g out<br />

fluent ana<strong>the</strong>mas aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> English. Prejudice, re-<br />

member, is only ano<strong>the</strong>r way <strong>of</strong> spell<strong>in</strong>g " prejudge," and<br />

<strong>the</strong> blood flames <strong>in</strong> such an <strong>of</strong>ficial's face like a danger<br />

signal whenever <strong>the</strong> Missionary expostulates. But <strong>the</strong>re<br />

is impend<strong>in</strong>g change. Soon this political Apo<strong>the</strong>cary<br />

discovers a fly <strong>in</strong> his o<strong>in</strong>tment, <strong>the</strong> British and Belgians<br />

advanc<strong>in</strong>g simultaneously. Up from <strong>the</strong> South-West<br />

come <strong>the</strong> former; West from <strong>the</strong> Garenganze come <strong>the</strong><br />

latter, both bent on combat<strong>in</strong>g this Portuguese slavery,<br />

both encroach<strong>in</strong>g up near this Commandant's door.<br />

Time was when all around was no man's land, unlimited<br />

territory mean<strong>in</strong>g unlimited despotism. Now comes <strong>the</strong><br />

check. A hunted-down Luvale man runs across <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong>f to <strong>the</strong> Fort. Beaten every day by chicotte, he<br />

pays up some slaves, yet still <strong>the</strong>y dun and whack him<br />

all by proxy, all for that mysterious o<strong>the</strong>r man who is<br />

enjoy<strong>in</strong>g English protection across <strong>the</strong> border.<br />
