BORING OUT EAST 369<br />

and <strong>the</strong> man, smart<strong>in</strong>g with pa<strong>in</strong>, grips at <strong>the</strong><br />

lion's carotids like a vice, only, however, to get his three<br />

f<strong>in</strong>gers crunched <strong>of</strong>f. But his right hand is free, and still<br />

he cl<strong>in</strong>gs with all <strong>the</strong> tenacity <strong>of</strong> terror to that beast's<br />

throat— yes, cl<strong>in</strong>gs to conquer. A gasp, a dy<strong>in</strong>g gurgle,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> lioness owns up to <strong>the</strong> lordship <strong>of</strong> man—choked<br />

stone dead. To this day, all you can get out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

maimed hunter is a hiss<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>take <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> breath, and a<br />

sharp clench<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> his teeth, with <strong>the</strong> staccato wh<strong>in</strong>e :<br />

*' Oh !<br />

if I only had had one t<strong>in</strong>y po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> steel to jag her<br />

same <strong>long</strong> <strong>grass</strong> did it all, for although doubly armed with<br />

gun and spear, <strong>the</strong> lion and <strong>the</strong> man were <strong>in</strong> grips before<br />

<strong>the</strong> latter (startled, <strong>in</strong>determ<strong>in</strong>ate) even remembered that<br />

he was armed—disarmed ra<strong>the</strong>r, for <strong>in</strong> panic both spear<br />

and gun were thrown to <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ds. The beast, <strong>of</strong> course,<br />

was too terribly fresh to succumb to mere throttl<strong>in</strong>g, so,<br />

when <strong>the</strong>y rolled over, Kasansu, by a clever wriggle,<br />

got on to its back, and gripp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> nape <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lion's<br />

neck, willy, nilly, p<strong>in</strong>ned his hairy head on <strong>the</strong> ground.<br />

Believe it, <strong>the</strong>re was much champ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bit on <strong>the</strong><br />

lion's part at this curious compulsion to eat humble pie,<br />

but <strong>the</strong> man's roar<strong>in</strong>g for succour had brought on <strong>the</strong>
