hereabouts was found far<strong>the</strong>r up, dead by its own act<br />

<strong>of</strong> folly. Nor knife nor spear killed this monster, only<br />

its own vile voracity : <strong>the</strong> crocodile killed <strong>the</strong> negro, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> killed man killed <strong>the</strong> crocodile. Washed up on <strong>the</strong><br />

bank, <strong>the</strong> dead monster lay four feet high—not <strong>long</strong><br />

with a tell-tale human armbone stick<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>of</strong> its chest.<br />

The old fisherman who acted as sort <strong>of</strong> " Crocodile<br />

Coroner " on <strong>the</strong> occasion, clearly and conv<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>gly proved<br />

maddened to death. Goaded to its doom by a t<strong>in</strong>y leech,<br />

like a locomotive thunder<strong>in</strong>g down <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>of</strong>f this six<br />
