steam<strong>in</strong>g cups <strong>of</strong> best " Memory Blend," for <strong>the</strong> tea was so<br />

weak that it had to be imag<strong>in</strong>ed. Long afterwards we<br />

roasted a native pea <strong>in</strong>to supposititious c<strong>of</strong>fee, but to<br />

<strong>the</strong> end this poor substitute was a doctor's dose, not<br />

But our real problem is not Africa but <strong>the</strong> African.<br />

Laugh you first, but he laughs last; for to him, what<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r ? Wise ? Nay, he shakes his head and op<strong>in</strong>es we<br />

Europeans are wise, but our wisdom is ra<strong>the</strong>r showy than<br />

exact. The <strong>black</strong> man, he th<strong>in</strong>ks, is wiser than he seems,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> white one seems wiser than he is. No wonder<br />

this look<strong>in</strong>g-one-way-and-row<strong>in</strong>g-ano<strong>the</strong>r attitude <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

white man becomes <strong>the</strong> negro's parable for an <strong>in</strong>con-
