SHUT IN, BUT ALMOST OUT 211<br />

Shunted <strong>of</strong>f thus <strong>in</strong>to a sort <strong>of</strong> sid<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> tide <strong>of</strong> roar<strong>in</strong>g<br />

life sweeps past us down <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> valley <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Capital, an<br />

all-day stream <strong>of</strong> visitors trickl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> to us among <strong>the</strong> rocks.<br />

Arriv<strong>in</strong>g, as we do, almost empty-handed, Mushidi despises<br />

us for our own impecuniosity. In harsh and unembellished<br />

terms he <strong>in</strong>sists that we are no " whites " at all.^<br />

Room<strong>in</strong>g, as we utter strangers to each o<strong>the</strong>r do, <strong>in</strong><br />

mud African houses, <strong>the</strong>n, oh ! <strong>the</strong>n is love's crucible, for<br />

<strong>of</strong>ten <strong>in</strong>cipient fever makes a good man carp at rough fare<br />

—a good man, that is to say, with a bad body. How<br />

many people <strong>in</strong> England quote <strong>the</strong> text about brethren<br />

*' dwell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> unity " who only see <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> busy<br />

street, or at a week-end meet<strong>in</strong>g ? Let <strong>the</strong>m come out to<br />

Africa and learn <strong>the</strong> trials (and triumphs) <strong>of</strong> so literally<br />

dwell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> unity <strong>in</strong> a hot " station." Never out <strong>of</strong> each<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r's sight. In moderation I am bold to suspect my<br />

friend might f<strong>in</strong>d me passably or even mildly enterta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g,<br />

but <strong>in</strong> such frequent and overwhelm<strong>in</strong>g doses one must<br />

pall on one's poor bro<strong>the</strong>r. The trouble is, that one is<br />

tempted far too <strong>of</strong>ten to speak one's m<strong>in</strong>d, forgetful <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>in</strong> speak<strong>in</strong>g your m<strong>in</strong>d you must also m<strong>in</strong>d<br />

how you speak. Even <strong>the</strong> most genial <strong>of</strong> souls soon<br />

surprises himself more than his friend by a snap <strong>of</strong> irrita-<br />

tion quite foreign to his temperament. This is Africa at<br />

its old trick <strong>of</strong> fasten<strong>in</strong>g on its victim, and tighten<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

tropical grip on his soul.<br />

^ So, too, Dr. Moloney ;<br />

<strong>in</strong> his book he pities us and cannot " help th<strong>in</strong>k-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g that a pr<strong>of</strong>ound mistake was committed when <strong>the</strong> Missionaries were<br />

dispatched <strong>in</strong>to this barbarous country hundreds <strong>of</strong> miles from a European<br />

post."
