amongst animals, <strong>the</strong> bony f<strong>in</strong>gers like talons <strong>of</strong> a hawk<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g all <strong>the</strong> weapons <strong>of</strong> her forest w^arfare. The body<br />

cunn<strong>in</strong>gly coloured like <strong>the</strong> grey bark <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> trees <strong>in</strong><br />

which she lived, you can scarcely for a moment locate<br />

her, until you catch sight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>black</strong> eyes gleam<strong>in</strong>g like<br />

coals <strong>of</strong> fire. Then comes a shriek followed by a fierce<br />

cataract <strong>of</strong> what <strong>the</strong> natives call " monkey curses<br />

{Maf<strong>in</strong>ge ahorowe), and <strong>of</strong>i" she spr<strong>in</strong>gs from tree to tree,<br />

twist<strong>in</strong>g her face <strong>in</strong>to a grotesque sneer. She has<br />

<strong>in</strong>sanity is <strong>of</strong>ten only <strong>the</strong> logic <strong>of</strong> an accurate and<br />

overtaxed m<strong>in</strong>d. Even <strong>the</strong> tough <strong>black</strong>s with me nearly<br />

wept at this sight <strong>of</strong> sorrow ; and one old philosopher,<br />

after a solemn and dignified p<strong>in</strong>ch <strong>of</strong> snuff*, said, ** Truly<br />

<strong>the</strong> human race is only a huge beehive : w^e, <strong>the</strong> human
