THINKING BLACK<br />

But <strong>the</strong> faithful flame flickers on, an apostle <strong>of</strong> light, true<br />

*' th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>black</strong> " parable <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Devil's battalions try<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to snuff <strong>the</strong> little lights <strong>of</strong> testimony tw<strong>in</strong>kl<strong>in</strong>g across<br />

Africa. Far-fetched metaphor though this looks, yet can<br />

we place it under <strong>the</strong> sure shelter <strong>of</strong> high authority. For<br />

did not Faraday <strong>long</strong> ago beg<strong>in</strong> his famous lecture by<br />

declar<strong>in</strong>g " <strong>the</strong>re is not a law under which any part <strong>of</strong> this<br />

universe is governed that does not come <strong>in</strong>to play <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

phenomena <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chemical history <strong>of</strong> a candle " ? Not<br />

that <strong>the</strong>se millions <strong>of</strong> midges haven't a method <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

madness. Hidden for <strong>the</strong>ir lives by day <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> marsh, full<br />

well <strong>the</strong>y know that <strong>the</strong> scorch<strong>in</strong>g sun would devour <strong>the</strong>m<br />

if <strong>the</strong>y emerged, war to <strong>the</strong> death be<strong>in</strong>g proclaimed<br />

between solar light and <strong>the</strong>se broods <strong>of</strong> darkness. What<br />

wonder, <strong>the</strong>n, at this <strong>the</strong>ir revenge on <strong>the</strong> poor candle, a<br />

dim<strong>in</strong>utive disciple <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sun splutter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> night,<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir v<strong>in</strong>dictive swoop eloquent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> anti-light malice.<br />

This certa<strong>in</strong>ly is <strong>the</strong> native's notion, for <strong>in</strong> his alliterative<br />

language he makes a l<strong>in</strong>ear pun <strong>of</strong> it—call<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> lamp <strong>the</strong><br />

"Sun's little Sonny," <strong>the</strong> prefixes rhym<strong>in</strong>g as <strong>in</strong> English.<br />

This is digression, though, and we must get on with<br />

our story—but that means ano<strong>the</strong>r chapter.
