"GREAT WHITE LAKE" 401<br />

conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> this metallic message dangl<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> dead<br />

stork's leg is surely worth <strong>the</strong> ton <strong>of</strong> scientific fiction<br />

written on this subject <strong>of</strong> migratory birds— yes, Prussia<br />

is <strong>the</strong> name on <strong>the</strong> r<strong>in</strong>g, and 5th July <strong>the</strong> date <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong><br />

There is ano<strong>the</strong>r l<strong>in</strong>k, too, <strong>in</strong> this story, and that im-<br />

mensely important as <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> actual stork-route<br />

<strong>in</strong>to Africa. For, be it known, this stork had a bro<strong>the</strong>r-<br />

bird released from Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Germany <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same July<br />

with <strong>the</strong> same metallic data* But he, poor bird, is not<br />

made <strong>of</strong> steel and was shot <strong>in</strong> Tunis, just as he was<br />

enter<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> Great African panorama—a needless<br />

death seem<strong>in</strong>gly, yet how necessary as a l<strong>in</strong>k <strong>in</strong> our chart<br />

<strong>of</strong> bird-migration ! For here we see what really happened.<br />

Sail<strong>in</strong>g South out <strong>of</strong> Prussia, full speed ahead, over Bavaria<br />

until <strong>the</strong> Alps are cleared. Leav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Adriatic far on<br />

Florence and out <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> Mediterranean with stately<br />

beat<strong>in</strong>g p<strong>in</strong>ions. Africa is now ahead, <strong>the</strong> land <strong>of</strong> sun,<br />

sand, and surprises beckon<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m on, but Tunis sees <strong>the</strong><br />

death <strong>of</strong> Stork No. 1. (Alas, man and stork alike, how<br />

<strong>of</strong>ten, Africa, hast thou killed a new arrival with one<br />

such brutal knock-down blow ! ) But Stork No. 2 knows a<br />

th<strong>in</strong>g or two, and he plans a route far from gunshot<br />

range; noth<strong>in</strong>g less than <strong>the</strong> tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Africa <strong>in</strong> its<br />

<strong>long</strong>itud<strong>in</strong>al length, and sail<strong>in</strong>g serenely down <strong>the</strong> middle.<br />

Not many shot-guns <strong>the</strong>re, quoth Mr. Stork. So <strong>the</strong>re<br />

he starts on his <strong>long</strong> African journey, fifty solid degrees<br />

<strong>of</strong> latitude ahead. Out <strong>of</strong> Europe <strong>in</strong>to Tripoli, out <strong>of</strong>
