<strong>22</strong>4 THINKING BLACK<br />

was Christ's bondslave and led about <strong>in</strong> triumph as<br />

Christ <strong>the</strong> Conqueror s trophy.<br />

Swollen with pride and satisfaction, <strong>the</strong> generalissimo<br />

advances with a strut <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> this vast sea <strong>of</strong><br />

brilliantly clad negroes, followed by <strong>the</strong> captured chiefs,<br />

or prisoners <strong>of</strong> high status, hard <strong>in</strong> his wake, this l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> captured tail<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>f <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> broken-kneed dregs <strong>of</strong><br />

slavery. They are nearly all women, however, a pro<strong>of</strong><br />

this that <strong>the</strong> men <strong>the</strong>y fought were really mascul<strong>in</strong>e<br />

enough to die ra<strong>the</strong>r than be captured—hence <strong>the</strong>se heaps<br />

<strong>of</strong> heads hidden <strong>in</strong> clouds <strong>of</strong> flies. One brute, you notice,<br />

has three skulls tied toge<strong>the</strong>r dangl<strong>in</strong>g from his mouth,<br />

and Mushidi claims all <strong>the</strong>se heads by formally descend<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from his throne and putt<strong>in</strong>g his foot on each one : a sort<br />

<strong>of</strong> trampl<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> necks <strong>of</strong> his enemies, I suppose.<br />

Meanwhile, <strong>the</strong> army has fired a deafen<strong>in</strong>g feu de joie<br />

po<strong>in</strong>t blank <strong>in</strong> our faces, and <strong>the</strong>n beg<strong>in</strong>s a show <strong>of</strong> sham<br />

fight<strong>in</strong>g dur<strong>in</strong>g which different detachments are seen <strong>in</strong><br />

attack and retreat, now simulat<strong>in</strong>g a clever ambush and<br />

anon spr<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g like pan<strong>the</strong>rs from <strong>the</strong> <strong>grass</strong>. There is an<br />

end to all this, and a facetious one. Like Nero, who was<br />

va<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> his music, Mushidi has <strong>the</strong> vanity to th<strong>in</strong>k that<br />

he can—dance. Dull, dazed, and dumbfounded you, a<br />

spectator, can scarcely believe your eyes when <strong>the</strong> old<br />

man is seen to descend and beg<strong>in</strong> his rheumatic shuffles, a<br />

danc<strong>in</strong>g bear <strong>in</strong>deed !<br />

Nearly tripped by his own bunched-<br />

up vesture, <strong>the</strong>se contortions are a speciality, and called<br />

<strong>the</strong> R.A.A. dance—Royal August Antics, that is to say<br />

Could you not more truthfully translate this R.A.A.
