Mweru negro <strong>in</strong>to very crooked sanitation—<strong>the</strong> old<br />

story <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> negro debas<strong>in</strong>g his surround<strong>in</strong>gs and <strong>the</strong><br />

surround<strong>in</strong>gs tak<strong>in</strong>g revenge by debas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> negro. A<br />

hundred huts packed toge<strong>the</strong>r means that a smo<strong>the</strong>red<br />

<strong>in</strong>cipient cough beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g away at <strong>the</strong> corner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

hamlet is, <strong>in</strong> a few days, heard <strong>in</strong>fectiously cough, cough-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g its way round <strong>the</strong> beehive town. But if so with an<br />

elementary cough, how about <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fectional terrors <strong>of</strong><br />

sleep<strong>in</strong>g sickness ? In Lubaland, as I now write, whole<br />

towns are be<strong>in</strong>g wiped <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> map—<strong>the</strong> Nodder <strong>the</strong>y<br />

call that .<br />

disease. So, too, smallpox licks up a whole<br />

population, <strong>the</strong> disease sweep<strong>in</strong>g through <strong>the</strong> land like<br />

<strong>the</strong> annual <strong>grass</strong>-fires. Here, <strong>the</strong>n, we see <strong>the</strong>m crowd<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and verm<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir filth. Liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> crowds <strong>the</strong>y<br />

must die <strong>in</strong> crowds, like <strong>the</strong> flock <strong>of</strong> five duck you can<br />

shoot with one cartridge from that same stockade. For<br />

<strong>the</strong> Luban duck are like <strong>the</strong> adjacent smallpox Africans,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y stupidly flock thickly, a half-dozen easily fall<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

one shot. In Lubaland one burn<strong>in</strong>g arrow silently fired<br />

<strong>in</strong>to that <strong>grass</strong> village did literally burn <strong>the</strong> whole <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> mushroom edifices out <strong>of</strong> existence—a perfect type<br />

this <strong>of</strong> what <strong>in</strong>flammable diseases do all over our weary,<br />

Christless land.<br />

Such, <strong>the</strong>n, is <strong>the</strong> precious price <strong>the</strong>y pay for <strong>the</strong><br />

plan <strong>of</strong> higgledy-piggledy. For <strong>the</strong> crooked ways <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

crooked negro have not yet been exhausted, and <strong>long</strong> ago<br />

it must have been obvious to <strong>the</strong> most superficial reader<br />

that this crooked sanitation must also breed a crooked<br />

set <strong>of</strong> morals. Laugh at <strong>the</strong> Missionary as <strong>the</strong> modern
