KAVANGA: GATES OF THE MORNING 379<br />

Near<strong>in</strong>g noon <strong>the</strong> boys fire a broadside <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir match-<br />

locks <strong>in</strong>to a dense cavalcade <strong>of</strong> elephants, a mere p<strong>in</strong>prick<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> armour-plat<strong>in</strong>g : £10,000 <strong>of</strong> ivory on <strong>the</strong> move<br />

what a sight ! Each tusker with five or more wives<br />

accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> length <strong>of</strong> ivory. The tusks, too, <strong>of</strong><br />

varied sorts and colours, some not at all normal, and one<br />

great bull with only one tooth. Ano<strong>the</strong>r has a freak tusk,<br />

and while <strong>the</strong> normal one gleams gracefully up <strong>in</strong> posi-<br />

tion, its tw<strong>in</strong> tusk twists down <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> opposite direction,<br />

<strong>the</strong> great beast look<strong>in</strong>g a horror. But remember, animals<br />

though <strong>the</strong>y are, this is not a mob but an army, and one<br />

great bull seems to lord it over <strong>the</strong> whole battalion. In<br />

response to a most aristocratic wave <strong>of</strong> his trunk, like a<br />

Field Marshal's baton, away <strong>the</strong>y rush straight ahead,<br />

clear<strong>in</strong>g for us, not a path but a royal avenue. The<br />

co<strong>in</strong>cidence <strong>of</strong> our far-<strong>of</strong>lf landmark, <strong>the</strong> steel-blue wall<br />

<strong>of</strong> Kundelungu, com<strong>in</strong>g for once <strong>in</strong>to dead l<strong>in</strong>e with <strong>the</strong><br />

track <strong>of</strong> this army corps <strong>of</strong> elephants, is surely eloquent<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> go<strong>in</strong>gs forth <strong>of</strong> our God be<strong>in</strong>g prepared as <strong>the</strong><br />

morn<strong>in</strong>g. Here at last is your prepared path—and made<br />

by elephants, too.<br />

But <strong>the</strong>re is more to follow. Not for noth<strong>in</strong>g are<br />

<strong>the</strong>se woods christened by <strong>the</strong> negroes "<strong>the</strong> Lord's<br />

Larder." "Plantations <strong>of</strong> God" is <strong>the</strong>ir second name<br />

for <strong>the</strong> same idea, and as <strong>the</strong> native would not dare to<br />

dream <strong>of</strong> driv<strong>in</strong>g God out <strong>of</strong> His own garden, why should<br />

I ? " Every beast <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> forest is M<strong>in</strong>e," said The Same,<br />

Who proves it by send<strong>in</strong>g this densely packed herd<br />

gallop<strong>in</strong>g true for objective. (Why recognise God <strong>in</strong>
