VICE VERSA 201<br />

<strong>the</strong> two adverse races beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g to write at <strong>the</strong> opposite<br />

sides <strong>of</strong> a sheet <strong>of</strong> paper, and certa<strong>in</strong> it is, that <strong>the</strong> gulf<br />

cutt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> Arab from <strong>the</strong> European is "as far as <strong>the</strong><br />

East is from <strong>the</strong> West."<br />

Take <strong>the</strong> Gospel. " Believe or die," says he— " Believe<br />

and live," say we. Take polygamy. We proclaim Christ<br />

born <strong>of</strong> a woman, and <strong>the</strong> dignity <strong>of</strong> her sex : last at <strong>the</strong><br />

cross, first at <strong>the</strong> tomb—<strong>the</strong>y glory <strong>in</strong> polygamy as <strong>the</strong><br />

only true code <strong>of</strong> marital morals. We crusade aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

<strong>the</strong> bondage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> slave—<strong>the</strong>y are <strong>the</strong> notorious slavers<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Central</strong> Africa. We quote <strong>the</strong> Golden Eule, " Do unto<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs," etc., as <strong>the</strong> Christ's <strong>in</strong>cipient abolition <strong>of</strong> slavery<br />

—<strong>the</strong>y retort with <strong>the</strong> Devil's golden rule <strong>of</strong> £ s. d.<br />

We prove that to barter human be<strong>in</strong>gs is to deny that<br />

man was made <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> image <strong>of</strong> God — <strong>the</strong>y quote<br />

Mohammed who enjo<strong>in</strong>s <strong>the</strong> sell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> a slave. Now<br />

precisely as with this sharp cleavage <strong>of</strong> slavery, so too<br />

with much more. Take <strong>the</strong> Arab doctr<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> force, as<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> Christian doctr<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> persuasion : here you<br />

have <strong>the</strong> most thrill<strong>in</strong>g contrast <strong>of</strong> all. We po<strong>in</strong>t to<br />

Christ <strong>in</strong>culcat<strong>in</strong>g a crusade <strong>of</strong> love and peace <strong>in</strong> His<br />

very last commandment : " Go ye <strong>in</strong>to all <strong>the</strong> world."<br />

They po<strong>in</strong>t to Mohammed among his last acts plann<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a bloody war <strong>of</strong> exterm<strong>in</strong>ation.<br />

(Later.)<br />

One <strong>in</strong>cident I recall, a tragedy that burnt on my<br />

m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong>delibly this Arab versus Englishman contrast.<br />

It was after <strong>the</strong> smash-up. A great Arab, Kasokota his<br />

nom de guerre^ is condemned to death by court martial
