any coal, only forest faggots, and <strong>the</strong>se lie soon runs<br />

through, ow<strong>in</strong>g to his deforestation for corn -grow<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Here, <strong>the</strong>n, <strong>in</strong> lack <strong>of</strong> firewood we see ano<strong>the</strong>r factor<br />

driv<strong>in</strong>g him on. Face this mov<strong>in</strong>g-on problem.<br />

Up go <strong>the</strong> stately build<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> white man and<br />

down go <strong>the</strong> mud huts <strong>of</strong> his <strong>black</strong> neighbour. No. 1<br />

just gett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> as No. 2 is mov<strong>in</strong>g out. Alone <strong>the</strong><br />

Missionary f<strong>in</strong>ds himself, <strong>the</strong> clannish coalescence <strong>of</strong> his<br />

parishioners outwitt<strong>in</strong>g his plans. Lead<strong>in</strong>g up to this<br />

po<strong>in</strong>t, all has been hypocritical silence, and <strong>the</strong> foreigner<br />

with <strong>in</strong>nocent serenity th<strong>in</strong>ks his <strong>black</strong> neighbours are<br />

a fixture, so he settles down to build, which also, alas<br />

means build<strong>in</strong>g to settle down. " Strangers and pil-<br />

all <strong>the</strong> strangers, for we sa<strong>in</strong>ts are anchored with<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> th<strong>in</strong>g !—a middle-class Missionary acclaimed as <strong>the</strong><br />

local Carnegie, stagger<strong>in</strong>g rich, no poverty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cross,<br />

no stigma <strong>of</strong> shame, but contrariwise a grovell<strong>in</strong>g negro<br />

laud<strong>in</strong>g him as lord and master—a poor enough start for<br />

<strong>the</strong> dear old Gospel. So very much is <strong>the</strong> African a<br />

servant <strong>of</strong> servants that he outwits <strong>the</strong> Missionary, who<br />

should be a servant <strong>of</strong> all ; and here <strong>in</strong> this <strong>in</strong>itial wrong<br />

Christ is wounded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> house <strong>of</strong> His friends, Christianity<br />

equat<strong>in</strong>g wealth, not poverty. Br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> African to book
