386 THINKING BLACK<br />

like a st<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g whip-lash to <strong>the</strong> conscience came <strong>the</strong><br />

thought that we might have saved her had we been only<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> country <strong>in</strong> time.<br />

The pathless forest <strong>break</strong>s occasionally, and for a<br />

stretch <strong>of</strong> three hours or so you see it th<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g out ; not<br />

now <strong>the</strong> dense dark th<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g, but dotted<br />

over with large acacias, mimosas, and Euphorbias. A<br />

curious example <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> grotesque <strong>in</strong> vegetation, <strong>the</strong>se<br />

candelabra top each sugar-loaf ant-hill with <strong>the</strong> humor-<br />

ous h<strong>in</strong>t that after sundown <strong>the</strong>y will be lit up as forest<br />

lamps. The stiflf spokes have <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>sidious suggestion<br />

that <strong>the</strong>y were artificially hammered out <strong>of</strong> bronze, and,<br />

as <strong>the</strong> mason's model for <strong>the</strong> swollen column <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

ancient temples <strong>of</strong> Egypt ? And is not Egypt <strong>the</strong> door<br />

<strong>of</strong> Africa? The Hall <strong>of</strong> Columns, for <strong>in</strong>stance, <strong>of</strong> Seti i.,<br />

what is it but only so many Borassus palms petrified <strong>in</strong><br />

a row? The same th<strong>in</strong>g this as <strong>the</strong> Greeks modell<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir porticoes and peristyles from <strong>the</strong> date palm. If,<br />

however, <strong>the</strong>se candelabras h<strong>in</strong>t at <strong>the</strong> bizarre <strong>in</strong> Nature,<br />

far<strong>the</strong>r on we encounter <strong>the</strong> tragic. Monster cobra-like<br />

Lianas hold giant trees <strong>of</strong> great girth <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir death-<br />

grip, <strong>the</strong> victims <strong>in</strong> every case nearly strangled, and<br />

hold<strong>in</strong>g out pale, pa<strong>the</strong>tic arms, preach<strong>in</strong>g to us as we
