THINKING BLACK<br />

all <strong>the</strong> matchwood rafters shoot<strong>in</strong>g up and converg<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>to one apex, so, and much worse so, with <strong>the</strong>se human<br />

hand-ladles and spoons, all shoot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong><br />

gravity, all digg<strong>in</strong>g out from <strong>the</strong> mass <strong>of</strong> mush <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

voracious supper. Speak<strong>in</strong>g is taboo at this sacred<br />

season. " Table-talk " is only <strong>the</strong> happy lot <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

lands who boast <strong>of</strong> tables, but Mr. African d<strong>in</strong>es on<br />

<strong>the</strong> earth that boasts <strong>of</strong> seed-time and harvest, and <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> first <strong>in</strong>stance gave <strong>the</strong>m that bountiful meal. But<br />

<strong>the</strong> high crime and misdemeanour <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town is to d<strong>in</strong>e<br />

improvement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> soul. But God's equilateral triangle<br />

<strong>of</strong> body, soul, and spirit must never be ignored. Is not<br />

<strong>the</strong> body wholly ensouled, and is not <strong>the</strong> soul wholly<br />

embodied ? Too <strong>of</strong>ten <strong>in</strong> Missionary literature <strong>the</strong> writer<br />

talks about <strong>the</strong>se " humble abodes " <strong>of</strong> his <strong>black</strong> parish-<br />

ioners, whereas <strong>the</strong> real phras<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> matter is that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

are more humbl<strong>in</strong>g than humble. The more grandiose<br />

our Mission stations, <strong>the</strong> more strik<strong>in</strong>g and impossible <strong>the</strong>
