<strong>the</strong> papyrus. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se birds I cannot place, Nseva<br />

<strong>the</strong>y call it, and <strong>the</strong>y flock so thickly that <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

a proverb for a united phalanx <strong>of</strong> patriots. Runic rhyme<br />

this proverb, and Englished thus :<br />

"A thousand Nseva rise at once,<br />

Each one refus<strong>in</strong>g precedence."<br />

Any one <strong>of</strong> an arithmetical turn <strong>of</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d, I <strong>in</strong>vite to<br />

consider carefully <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g figures <strong>in</strong>dicative <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

thickness <strong>of</strong> this flock—at one bang 114 (one hundred<br />

and fourteen) fell to <strong>the</strong> right barrel <strong>of</strong> a Greener.<br />

Most wonderful <strong>of</strong> all, some far-travelled storks are<br />

<strong>the</strong>re, dar<strong>in</strong>g birds that have shot far down from <strong>the</strong><br />

North :—<br />

"Wild birds that change<br />

Their season <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> night, and wail <strong>the</strong>ir way<br />

From cloud to cloud down <strong>the</strong> <strong>long</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d."<br />

Feed<strong>in</strong>g on snakes, frogs, and fish as staple diet, <strong>the</strong> <strong>long</strong><br />

Southward journey gives <strong>the</strong>m an en route chance <strong>of</strong> a<br />

crab here, a shrimp <strong>the</strong>re. In hard times, where sterile<br />

stretches <strong>of</strong> desert must be crossed, <strong>the</strong>ir crop and stomach<br />

are crammed full <strong>of</strong> shells. It would seem a wild ex-<br />

aggeration to suggest that <strong>the</strong>se storks ever saw Egypt,<br />

but not far East from here <strong>the</strong> whole truth <strong>of</strong> migration<br />

came out. True, a bird cannot talk, but what if one day it<br />

br<strong>in</strong>gs a letter, to wit, a light metal r<strong>in</strong>g bear<strong>in</strong>g a number<br />

and date fastened to one leg ? And what if <strong>the</strong> said<br />

r<strong>in</strong>g proclaims <strong>the</strong> said stork to have been liberated away<br />

up <strong>in</strong> North Germany ? The ounce <strong>of</strong> avoirdupois fact
