THINKING BLACK<br />

cook<strong>in</strong>g all <strong>the</strong> meals with <strong>the</strong> alacrity <strong>of</strong> a girl <strong>in</strong> her teens.<br />

Beam<strong>in</strong>g with simple truth, <strong>the</strong> more this old lady talks<br />

<strong>the</strong> more <strong>the</strong> scales <strong>of</strong> prejudice fall from your eyes, and<br />

you beg<strong>in</strong> to see her strik<strong>in</strong>g resemblance to some English<br />

lady you have known.<br />

In Lubaland I met ano<strong>the</strong>r such dear granny whose<br />

<strong>in</strong>tention was better than her atta<strong>in</strong>ment. A beam<strong>in</strong>g<br />

lady, seventy at a guess, she claims to be <strong>the</strong> champion<br />

cook <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country ; tells you, moreover, that she is <strong>the</strong><br />

Chiefs cook. Pro<strong>of</strong> positive this, that be<strong>in</strong>g Chiefs cook<br />

she is chief cook also. Has cooked <strong>in</strong> her day all manner<br />

<strong>of</strong> messes : fat snakes, s<strong>of</strong>t snails, and many ano<strong>the</strong>r menu<br />

item that would look more polite <strong>in</strong> French than <strong>in</strong><br />

English. Boiled dogs, she tells me, are her speciality, and<br />

accord<strong>in</strong>g to this authority <strong>the</strong> Lubans pet <strong>the</strong>ir famous<br />

dogs for <strong>the</strong> greedy reason that <strong>the</strong> very dog that was so<br />

friendly before he entered <strong>the</strong> cook<strong>in</strong>g-pot might still<br />

agree with <strong>the</strong>m—<strong>in</strong> digestion. Well, this k<strong>in</strong>dly dame<br />

it was who came pok<strong>in</strong>g around my pots and pans, em-<br />

boldened by her " Koyal Letters Patent" to believe that<br />

she, poor soul, could even cook a da<strong>in</strong>ty dish for " he <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> boots." F<strong>in</strong>ally, my boy gave me hopelessly away,<br />

by h<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g that I ate eggs, a very debased sort <strong>of</strong> diet<br />

to a Luban, for <strong>in</strong> that egg is not <strong>the</strong> chick yet unborn ?<br />

(And if we must eat eggs <strong>the</strong>n, ex hypo., why not wait<br />

until <strong>the</strong>y are just old enough to h<strong>in</strong>t that <strong>the</strong>re is a<br />

semblance to a chick <strong>in</strong>side ?) My boy, however, com<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t with praiseworthy directness <strong>in</strong> two terse,<br />

patronis<strong>in</strong>g words coudescended to tell this Chief-because-
