reveals <strong>the</strong> names <strong>of</strong> her many paramours, all <strong>of</strong> whom<br />

must now pay damages for <strong>the</strong> grandchild's death.<br />

Here is a strong healthy stream we must tackle.<br />

And be<strong>in</strong>g strong, not sickly, how can you expect it to<br />

be always conf<strong>in</strong>ed to its bed ? W<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g and rew<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g<br />

like a watch-spr<strong>in</strong>g, we follow <strong>the</strong> twists <strong>of</strong> our river<br />

round <strong>the</strong> great S, <strong>the</strong>n out we go toge<strong>the</strong>r, both<br />

river and traveller, out on a pancake pla<strong>in</strong>. More<br />

marsh than pla<strong>in</strong> this becomes, alas ! for its old orderly<br />

up-stream flow is now impossible; and although no<br />

doubt, like ourselves, this river entered on this pla<strong>in</strong><br />

with <strong>the</strong> very best <strong>in</strong>tentions, <strong>the</strong> flat bankless<br />

Not that this '* double man " is doubly a man—oh !<br />

no,<br />

for <strong>the</strong> more <strong>in</strong>ches you go up <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world <strong>the</strong> lower you<br />

descend both <strong>in</strong> imag<strong>in</strong>ation and <strong>in</strong> reality. Each grop<strong>in</strong>g<br />

step <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pitchy, st<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g mud sees you nervously<br />

clutch<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> negro's head, knees driven <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

neck and ever m<strong>in</strong>dful <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> white knight's fate <strong>in</strong><br />

" Alice's Adventures," to wit, a beautiful parabolic curve,<br />

head first. And <strong>the</strong>n for <strong>the</strong> sordid sequel. Ga<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g
