Garenganze goal yet a <strong>long</strong> way <strong>of</strong>if. These f<strong>in</strong>e folks do<br />

not measure time by means <strong>of</strong> little mach<strong>in</strong>es carried <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir pockets. No need <strong>in</strong> this easy land to catch tra<strong>in</strong><br />

or tram by a fraction <strong>of</strong> a second. There is not one time-<br />

piece <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> vast country, <strong>the</strong>ir only watch and eight-day<br />

clock be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> accurate sun who faileth never. To say,<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore, that " punctually on <strong>the</strong> stroke <strong>of</strong> six " our caravan<br />

moves out <strong>of</strong> camp is an error, unless you apply <strong>the</strong> phrase<br />

to our slavers, who can only get <strong>the</strong>ir bondsmen <strong>of</strong>f after<br />

empty-handed we are not empty-headed, and <strong>the</strong>refore<br />

cannot give what we do not possess. Well, this demon-<br />

strable denial <strong>of</strong> ours is, as I have said, a real anchor to<br />

w<strong>in</strong>dward, for <strong>the</strong> African has a curiously hard-headed<br />

way <strong>of</strong> judg<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>in</strong>gs by practical pro<strong>of</strong>. But, mark you,<br />

until <strong>in</strong> some way you have paid this man's demands,<br />

normal relations with <strong>the</strong> tribe <strong>in</strong> food-buy<strong>in</strong>g are not<br />

supposed to be established. You are boycotted, and<br />

nei<strong>the</strong>r by charter nor barter can you get anyth<strong>in</strong>g from<br />

<strong>the</strong>m. First th<strong>in</strong>gs first is <strong>the</strong> idea <strong>in</strong> this prelim<strong>in</strong>ary
