DARK DOINGS IN LUVALELAND 145<br />

her neighbour's child. Here, <strong>the</strong>n, comes <strong>the</strong> hell-born<br />

thought. Now is her chance. So, dissolv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> philan-<br />

thropic smiles, she hypocritically <strong>of</strong>fers to nurse baby <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r's absence—consequence : murder. The human<br />

fiend rubs <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> gums <strong>of</strong> baby <strong>the</strong> virus <strong>of</strong> a loathsome<br />

and nameless disease, and <strong>the</strong> cherub dies a horrible death.<br />

Even <strong>the</strong> local <strong>black</strong> poet is horrified at a th<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> this<br />

sort, and composes a Luban dirge which I translate :<br />

"What is a baby's dy<strong>in</strong>g groan<br />

To <strong>the</strong> barren who have none <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own?"<br />

Decidedly, we are <strong>in</strong> Luvaleland. The young boys<br />

about here are called <strong>the</strong> men, and <strong>the</strong> elders are called<br />

<strong>the</strong> "old boys," and no wonder. For <strong>the</strong>se youngsters<br />

beg<strong>in</strong> to live at full gallop when <strong>the</strong>y are more babies<br />

than boys, and thus early sow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>y reap a<br />

roar<strong>in</strong>g whirlw<strong>in</strong>d : at twenty <strong>years</strong> <strong>of</strong> age <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

weak and can scarcely trot, much less gallop, <strong>without</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> spur <strong>of</strong> stimulants. Borrowed beer, and preferably<br />

borrowed than bought. Sneaked tobacco, and <strong>the</strong> more<br />

he sneaks <strong>the</strong> pleasanter <strong>the</strong> smoke. Hemp paid for,<br />

ay, paid with <strong>the</strong> uttermost farth<strong>in</strong>g, for this last lashes<br />

him with passion. And so <strong>the</strong> three wicks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lamp<br />

<strong>of</strong> life soon burn out <strong>in</strong> blazes, <strong>the</strong> bra<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong> blood, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> breath. " Soon ripe, soon rotten," is <strong>the</strong> proverb<br />

that tells <strong>the</strong> whole story, for if he must be a man at<br />

fourteen <strong>the</strong>n he is sure <strong>of</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g a boy at thirty. An<br />

African lad knows everyth<strong>in</strong>g too early, and <strong>the</strong>refore<br />

can learn noth<strong>in</strong>g when it is too late.<br />
