than work<strong>in</strong>g by day. For to Mr. Negro a dream is an<br />

avant-courier from to-morrow, a whisper out <strong>of</strong> eternity<br />

for <strong>the</strong> guidance <strong>of</strong> men. Far<strong>the</strong>r East I came across<br />

a pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> this. Com<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>grass</strong>, I met a band<br />

<strong>of</strong> solemn-look<strong>in</strong>g men with a curious old-world look <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir faces. Wonder <strong>of</strong> wonders, <strong>the</strong>y were a "dream<br />

embassy," said <strong>the</strong>y ; had travelled a <strong>long</strong> way and were<br />

afoot on a k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> Missionary journey from one great<br />

chief to ano<strong>the</strong>r, his friend and faithful ally <strong>of</strong> <strong>years</strong>.<br />

A " dream embassy," mark you, God hav<strong>in</strong>g spoken to<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir chief <strong>in</strong> a great dream ; and <strong>the</strong> solemnity <strong>of</strong> it all<br />

had so sunk <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> monarch's soul that he sent <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong>se<br />

Missionaries <strong>of</strong> his dream to warn his dear friend, a<br />

bro<strong>the</strong>r-k<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ways <strong>of</strong> God with man. So serious<br />

a th<strong>in</strong>g is this dream-tell<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong>y have co<strong>in</strong>ed a<br />

special verb (Lotolwela), '* to expound a dream." Not <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> temper <strong>of</strong> mere expediency did I listen to <strong>the</strong>ir sacred<br />

story, <strong>the</strong> negro tete-a-tete with <strong>the</strong> Inf<strong>in</strong>ite, men on <strong>the</strong><br />

march for many miles, <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>the</strong>me, God ! God ! God<br />

Picture me <strong>the</strong>re a dazed Missionary listen<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong>se<br />

dream-tellers — listen<strong>in</strong>g and wonder<strong>in</strong>g, listen<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

w^onder<strong>in</strong>g—as with uplifted hands <strong>the</strong>y po<strong>in</strong>t skywards<br />

and pa<strong>in</strong>t it all so vividly. Tell<strong>in</strong>g me <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stately<br />

go<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> God <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir far-away marsh ; how that He<br />

challenged <strong>the</strong>ir k<strong>in</strong>g as to his dignity ; how that <strong>the</strong><br />

k<strong>in</strong>g responded with his <strong>long</strong> array <strong>of</strong> titles ;<br />

and how that<br />

<strong>the</strong> more he vaunted before God <strong>the</strong> less did his strength<br />

become. Yet aga<strong>in</strong> and aga<strong>in</strong> did God so ask him who<br />

he was, and just so <strong>of</strong>ten did <strong>the</strong>ir k<strong>in</strong>g make this foolish<br />
