SHUT IN, BUT ALMOST OUT <strong>22</strong>1<br />

Surely this doggerel proves that <strong>the</strong> old phrase "as free<br />

as a bird " is a world-wide metaphor. Thus you see that<br />

even <strong>in</strong> gr<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g slavery your despised negro chattel gets<br />

poetry out <strong>of</strong> his prose <strong>of</strong> life by th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old<br />

home <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>Luban marsh where " mama'' (yes, <strong>the</strong> same<br />

old English word) is <strong>long</strong><strong>in</strong>g for her lost bairn. One such<br />

mo<strong>the</strong>r I redeemed from her fifth term <strong>of</strong> slavery, <strong>the</strong><br />

story all be<strong>in</strong>g told <strong>in</strong> that <strong>in</strong>consequential tone that<br />

it must be somewhere written that <strong>the</strong> virtues <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

mo<strong>the</strong>rs shall occasionally be visited on <strong>the</strong>ir children as<br />

well as <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir fa<strong>the</strong>rs."<br />

Probably, <strong>the</strong> most strik<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>in</strong>g to be seen at <strong>the</strong><br />

Bunkeya capital is <strong>the</strong> roar<strong>in</strong>g function <strong>of</strong> a "Triumph"<br />

when a return<strong>in</strong>g general is acclaimed as victor by <strong>the</strong><br />

assembled multitude. .Never did Roman general thunder-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g down <strong>the</strong> Via Appia with his victorious legions at<br />

his heels feel more <strong>in</strong>flated with feat <strong>of</strong> arms, This is <strong>the</strong>
