THINKING BLACK<br />

pick us up, we cannot budge, a rueful reflection this, quite<br />

a wholesome corrective to British bluff and swagger. So<br />

here on <strong>the</strong> bak<strong>in</strong>g Benguella sands we pass <strong>the</strong> <strong>long</strong><br />

electric nights <strong>long</strong><strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> climb<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great<br />

" African Divide." That straight, shy glance we con-<br />

stantly cast at <strong>the</strong> brown gird<strong>in</strong>g hills is full <strong>of</strong> desir<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with great desire to pass on and <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> Far Interior.<br />

We <strong>long</strong> for <strong>the</strong> uplands and brisk breezes that will blow<br />

new ideas <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> bra<strong>in</strong>. Only to get a start, only to<br />

get on our legs, this is <strong>the</strong> sole African solution <strong>of</strong><br />

stagnation. Solvitur ambulando was <strong>the</strong> cunn<strong>in</strong>g little<br />

But <strong>the</strong> need <strong>of</strong> a world <strong>of</strong> men for me."<br />

Thus you see how <strong>the</strong> African scores such an easy first<br />

<strong>in</strong> his own land. Even this vaunted pioneer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> ours<br />

he looks down upon <strong>in</strong> a most amused and patronis<strong>in</strong>g<br />

manner. Not that this ox-eyed <strong>black</strong> is lack<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> many<br />

a word <strong>of</strong> cheer when you are jaded with <strong>the</strong> journey<br />

<strong>in</strong>deed, he rallies you with <strong>the</strong> cheer<strong>in</strong>g rem<strong>in</strong>der:<br />

"Hurrah: <strong>the</strong> first a<strong>long</strong> <strong>the</strong> dew-damp path <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

morn<strong>in</strong>g (i.e. <strong>the</strong> pioneer) dries <strong>of</strong>f on his own body <strong>the</strong>
