Script Designing<br />

It only requires a glance at the<br />

pages of magazines and newspapers<br />

to find that script plays an important<br />

part not only in the advertising<br />

pages, but the other pages as well.<br />

Script always catches the eyes when<br />

used with other styles of lettering<br />

more severe and formal in character.<br />

Some of the script is good and some<br />

of it is poor but it usually attracts<br />

attention which is a real factor in<br />

successful advertising. A great deal<br />

of the script gotten out by the engraving<br />

houses is first carefully penciled<br />

and retraced with ink. However,<br />

a penman can save much time<br />

by writing with a slow finger movement,<br />

start words, trade marks, but<br />

large script designs for covers, headings<br />

and the like should be carefully<br />

penciled, especially if the script is<br />

tinted like word "Signs" in copy<br />

shown herewith.<br />

Uniform size and spacing are most<br />

important in all styles of lettering<br />

and regular slope must be observed.<br />

In tinting the largest word SIGNS,<br />

change the tone values by using short<br />

lines of varying directions. Thicken<br />

line of right of each letter, and note<br />

the pleasing contrast between the<br />

tinted and solid back areas.<br />

<strong>The</strong> lion rampant design is a good<br />

study in line and stipple. <strong>The</strong><br />

strength of this little design is obtained<br />

by the thick outline of the<br />

lion.<br />

Study script designs and try your<br />

hand on this class of work which is<br />

rather popular at the present time.<br />

It is a pleasure to report that Mr.<br />

Brown is back at his desk. We hope<br />

that he will continue to enjoy good<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Educator</strong><br />

This beautiful flourish was made by O. E. Hovis of 88 Biltmore Street, Springfield,<br />

Mass., for R. M. Maugans of P. O. Box 1064, Statesville, North Carolina.<br />

It was made in beautiful tints of orange, yellow, blue and purple. It is one<br />

of the prettiest little cards we have seen for some time.<br />

MADARASZ LETTER<br />

A reproduced Madarasz letter has<br />

been received from C. W. Jones, 655<br />

South Main Street, Randolph, Mass.<br />

He has a number of different letters<br />

for sale. This reproduction is especially<br />

clear and well printed. Every<br />

student of penmanship should have<br />

these copies in their scrapbook for<br />

study and inspiration.<br />

H. J. Ennis<br />

Henry J. Ennis, whose work in penmanship<br />

is familiar to most of our<br />

readeis, died of a heart attack in<br />

June. Mr. Ennis was a sergeant on<br />

the Police Force of Portland, Oregon.<br />

He was born in 1877 and followed<br />

penmanship as a hobby. His work<br />

was always of a very delicate artistic<br />

style.<br />
