GROUNDWATER FLOW MODELLING<br />

in Kz for the riverbed sediments to 10 md -1 produced minor river losses <strong>of</strong> 0.003 m 3 d -1 and<br />

0.0009 m 3 d -1 respectively over a short (40 minute) time period. Losses from the river are<br />

prevented by the rapid response <strong>of</strong> the aquifer to rises in river stage that occur under<br />

conditions <strong>of</strong> low Sy.<br />

High specific yield in the gravel greatly reduces the amplitude <strong>of</strong> the <strong>ground<strong>water</strong></strong> fluctuations<br />

and decreases the distance from the river at which the influence <strong>of</strong> flood events may be<br />

observed. An increase in <strong>water</strong> levels <strong>of</strong> 11 cm (Figure 6.18) can be seen in response to the<br />

flood peak at a distance <strong>of</strong> 50 m from the river when gravel Sy = 0.005, but any response is<br />
