6.12.1 Present Status <strong>of</strong> Statistical Activity:<br />

To record fish production data, department <strong>of</strong> fisheries has two different<br />

fishing sectors! Namely:<br />

(i) Reservoir Fisheries<br />

(ii) Riverine Fisheries<br />

6.12.1.1 Reservoir Fisheries:<br />

Fishing in reservoirs namely Gobindsagar, Maharana Pratap Sagar,<br />

Chamera and Ranjeet Sagar Dam comprising <strong>of</strong> an area <strong>of</strong> 43,000 ha is<br />

through the co-operative folds where fishermen have been organized in to<br />

fisheries co-operative societies. At present there are 43 such societies.<br />

Fish catches are landed & weighed at well defined fish landing centres.<br />

These fish landing centres are managed by fisheries <strong>of</strong>ficer being Incharge<br />

with assistance <strong>of</strong> two Fisheries Field Assistants. Department <strong>of</strong><br />

fisheries is charging royality @15% <strong>of</strong> the sale proceeds <strong>of</strong> the fish so<br />

caught. The primary data so generated at the landing centre is compiled<br />

and is reported to controlling <strong>of</strong>ficers at division level fortnightly as well<br />

as on monthly basises. Fish landing centres with comparatively low fish<br />

production are being managed by sub-inspector <strong>of</strong> fisheries.<br />

6.12.1.2 Riverine Fisheries:<br />

Fishermen <strong>of</strong> riverine sector obtain fishing license @ Rs 100/-license for<br />

a financial year and are largely unorganized in their activity. At present<br />

there are 5000 such riverine fishermen who are deriving their livelihood<br />

through fishing. Rivers/streams/khads have been divided into fishing<br />

beats. Each beat being looked after by a fisheries field assistant. Fisheries<br />

Field Assistant use to assess riverine catches by examining randomly fish<br />

catches <strong>of</strong> fishermen in their beat. These reports are being forwarded to<br />

the Assistant Director <strong>of</strong> Fisheries at Division Level.<br />

6.12.2 Need <strong>of</strong> Good data base:<br />

The envisaged objectives are as under:<br />

1. Timely collection <strong>of</strong> primary data and its reporting to Directorate <strong>of</strong><br />

Fisheries and further to Department <strong>of</strong> Economics and Statistics.<br />

2. Interpretation and Analysis <strong>of</strong> data so collected.
