9.8 Wholesale Price Index (WPI)<br />

Goal: Increase the coverage and participate in the National Activities.<br />

9.9 Consumer Price Index (CPI)<br />

Goals and Strategies:<br />

Since the CPI for industrial workers, agriculture labourers and urban<br />

non manual employees represent a certain set <strong>of</strong> categories which<br />

does not represent the whole population; the National Statistical<br />

Commission has recommended constructing CPI for rural and urban<br />

areas at district level. The NSSO has taken up a survey on consumer<br />

expenditure, employment and unemployment during the 66th round<br />

from July 2009 to June 2010. It is now necessary to make use <strong>of</strong> this<br />

survey to arrive at the weighting diagram and item basket for<br />

construction <strong>of</strong> CPI for rural and urban areas.<br />

Holding workshop <strong>of</strong> data producers, compilers and users to<br />

disseminate the information and to have feedback for further<br />

improvement.<br />

9.10 Birth and Death Registration<br />

Goals and strategies:<br />

It is essential to open registration centers in all government<br />

hospitals/nursing homes/primary health centers and in private<br />

hospitals in every district <strong>of</strong> the State<br />

District and block level registration functionaries are to be educated at<br />

regular intervals about the registration procedures as per the Act and<br />

Rules<br />

The existing publicity measures to create awareness are not effective;<br />

hence there is need for effective but low cost publicity measures<br />

having local and mass appeal through advertisements in the local<br />

cable network, Doordarshan and private channels. The services <strong>of</strong><br />

Self-help Groups and NGOs may be utilized for the purpose <strong>of</strong><br />

creating awareness. A focused strategy to cover low performing<br />

districts is to be taken up on priority by educating the people,<br />

particularly the women
