d) Methodology
The concepts and definitions used are the same as prescribed by the Union
Ministry of Agriculture. The area statistics mainly comes out of Gridawari
operations. Field to field enumeration is done in each crop season. The details of
crop area and land use particulars are recorded in a register called Khasra. Based
on this basic record, area statistics are aggregated to estimate area under crops at
State level. The estimates of average yield of principal crops at the state level and
district level are obtained through crop cutting experiments carried out according
to statistical techniques of random sampling in the form of General Crop
Estimation Surveys. The estimates of yield rates are adopted for working out
official estimates of crop production.
e) Data flow
Crop Area Statistics flows from the village records from the level of Patwari, to
the block level and then to the District level and thereafter to the state level.
Deputy Commissioner at District level consolidates the information for the
district and sends them to the Directorate of Land Records at State Level. At
every level consolidation and scrutiny is done. In the flow of agricultural data,
the NSSO staffs also play a part by way of sample checks. The data flow is
illustrated below.
f) time lag in release of data
The time lag in data dissemination is 24 months.
g) Publications
Crop area and production statistics are reported in publications of the Agriculture
Department, Land Records Department, and DES. Some of these publications
are:
• Agricultural Statistics
• Crop Estimation Survey Report
• Annual Season and Crop Report
• Agricultural Census Report
• Statistical Abstracts.
