6.23 Department of Urban Development:
In present scenario there is a need to capture data on urban statistics because
there is major shift from rural area to urban area. For town development there is a
need of Data for framing various policies. The state has 57 urban areas in 10
districts and in two districts Kinnaur and Lahul – Spiti has no urban area. The
urban population as per 2001 census in Himachal Pradesh is 5, 95,581 and it
comes out 9.8% of the total population. The state capital Shimla is the only
Municipal Corporation and there are 20 Municipal Councils, 28 Naga
Panchyatas, 7 Cantonment and one Census town. State has no authentic data base
on various socio economic indicators for urban areas.

1. Proposed Statistical Manpower structure:
As on today department have three posts of Statistical Personnel. Keeping in
the view data requirements of the department there is a need to provide statistical
manpower at Head Quarter & District level.
