c) Frequency<br />

The frequency <strong>of</strong> data collection is as follows:<br />

• Literacy/ Adult literacy – Decennial (NSS more frequently)<br />

• Enrolment Statistics – Annual<br />

• Examination Results – Annual<br />

• All Major Education Statistics – Annual<br />

d) Methodology<br />

Two types <strong>of</strong> information are collected annually. The first relates to numerical<br />

data on enrolment in different classes by gender, number <strong>of</strong> teachers, etc. This is<br />

collected so as to relate to 30 September <strong>of</strong> each year. The other part relates to<br />

school finances, such as pay and allowances, buildings, etc. The financial data<br />

are collected so as to relate to 31 March <strong>of</strong> the year. Information is collected in<br />

formats ES I, ES II and ES IV.<br />

The basic reporting unit is the school. The returns are collected, scrutinised, and<br />

compiled at Block level by the Block Education Officers, and transmitted to the<br />

District Education Officer - (DEO elementary/ DEO secondary). The DEOs<br />

scrutinise the data and consolidate at the District level, and transmit the data to<br />

the Directorates <strong>of</strong> Primary and Secondary Education where data is consolidated
