Mpande also attempted to destroy the position <strong>of</strong> Phakade Ka<br />

Macingwane Ka Lubhoko Mchunu. Phakade was an inkosi (chief) <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Chunu in Natal from the late 1830's until his death in 1880.'·<br />

He lived for a time in the Zulu kingdom after his father's (Macingwane)<br />

chiefdom had been broken up by King Shaka. During the battle <strong>of</strong><br />

Maqongqo in 1840 Phakade seized many <strong>of</strong> Dingane's cattle and crossed<br />

into the bush country <strong>of</strong> the Mp<strong>of</strong>ana (Mooi) river. 51 The Mp<strong>of</strong>ana river<br />

rises in the foothills <strong>of</strong>the Drakensberg near Giant's Castle and flows into<br />

the Thukela east <strong>of</strong> the present-day Tugela Ferry. Thus in 1848 Mpande<br />

demanded the return <strong>of</strong> the cattle Phakade had seized from Dingane.<br />

Phakade defied Mpande and the iziNyosi and the Dlambedlu amabutho<br />

were dispatched to route him out. 58 The Chunu then settled in the country<br />

about the confluence <strong>of</strong> the Thukela and Mp<strong>of</strong>ana (Mooi) rivers. In the<br />
