CHAPTER 0 lE<br />

AN OUTLINE OF THE ZULU DYNASTY<br />

Mpande Ka Senzangakhona was the third in succession in the dynasty <strong>of</strong><br />

"martial" kings in South-east Africa whose military genius transformed<br />

simple and servile clans into a powerful Zulu nation. Before the<br />

formation <strong>of</strong> such a nation, each clan was bound together by an<br />

affectionate reverence for its inkosi (chief)., It could be said that under<br />

such circumstances people were devoid <strong>of</strong> bellicose tendencies and lived<br />

much more in peace and content. The Zulu clan was one <strong>of</strong> about 100<br />

small clans scattered over the land under separate amakhosi (chiefs).'<br />

The Zulu clan had its genesis from the north <strong>of</strong> Mhlathuze river and were<br />

not originally part <strong>of</strong> the "Nguni" people. They were called amaNtungwa<br />

by the Qwabe clan because they remained in the north' The Zulu people<br />

used to arrive in the Qwabe clan with indungulu (hyparrhenia hirta) and<br />

ikhathazo (malaria preventative) medicines, and say on arrival, "<strong>of</strong>e<br />
