Mpande was devoid <strong>of</strong> the aptitude for martial exercises which<br />

manifested in Shaka and Dingane. When the British colonial<br />

establishment superceded that <strong>of</strong> the Voortrekkers, Mpande extended a<br />

hand <strong>of</strong> friendship to the local British settlers· Such ties, however, led to<br />

conflict between the British and Voortrekkers <strong>of</strong> the Republic <strong>of</strong> Natalia.<br />

In 1840, Mpande permitted the Voortrekkers to occupy the area between<br />

the Thukela and Black Mfolozi Rivers while concluding a boundary<br />

agreement with the British, stretching from the sources <strong>of</strong>Mzinyathi to its<br />

junction with the Thukela 9 These terms were influenced by the flow <strong>of</strong><br />

Zulu refugees and the increasing power <strong>of</strong>Mpande.<br />

Following such gestures the British Commissioner Henry Cloete later<br />

entered KwaZulu with traders D.C. Toohey and Henry Ogle to convince<br />

Mpande that the British had established complete control <strong>of</strong> the Colony<br />

<strong>of</strong>Natal. 10 Mpande pledged to resettle all Zulus living south <strong>of</strong>the<br />
