with his own appointee, resulting in numbers <strong>of</strong> Mthethwa leaving the<br />
Zulu kingdom. so Tradition also record that many important Mthethwa<br />
individuals joined Shaka, from which it can be inferred that an even larger<br />
segment <strong>of</strong>the polity probably transferred direct allegiance to the Zulu."<br />
One <strong>of</strong> Shaka's greatest trials <strong>of</strong> strength was the conquest <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Buthelezi clan under the leadership <strong>of</strong> Phungashe." His first conquest,<br />
however, was the Qwabe clan under Phakathwayo. Zulu was a younger<br />
brother <strong>of</strong>Qwabe, and the Zulus were consequently far less in number and<br />
importance than the Qwabes. Tradition depict the Qwabe chief,<br />
Phakathwayo, as a particular rival <strong>of</strong> Shaka. 53 He scorned the numerically<br />
inferior Zulu forces and insulted the person <strong>of</strong>the Zulu king as:<br />
