The leader <strong>of</strong> the Volksraad, A.WJ (Andries) Pretorius, engaged in<br />

cordial conversation with Mpande. He was aware that king Dingane<br />

(<strong>Mpande's</strong> half-brother) had suffered defeat against the Swazi and that<br />

Mpande had refused to help him raise new reinforcements. 68 Thus,<br />

<strong>Mpande's</strong> presence before the Volksraad was based on his request to be<br />

left alone to settle between Mhlali and Mvoti Rivers.'" When asked why<br />

he did not rule the Zulu nation after the death <strong>of</strong>king Shaka, he replied:<br />

"I was heading a punitive expedition<br />

against chiefSoshangane. On my return I<br />

found Dingane in power, having killed<br />

Shaka and all children <strong>of</strong>the harem. "7.<br />

Pretorius realised that declaring Voortrekker friendship with Mpande<br />

would ensure their security against a possible Zulu invasion from north <strong>of</strong><br />

Thukela." Such declaration laid the foundation for the battle <strong>of</strong><br />
