British subjects from leaving the colony and wanted Maitland to ensure<br />

that Zulu aggression was not provoked.<br />

On 7 December 1846 Mpande objected to the number <strong>of</strong> white hunters<br />

and traders entering KwaZulu. He also pressed for the return <strong>of</strong> cattle<br />

which Mawa, <strong>Mpande's</strong> aunt, took to Natal." <strong>Mpande's</strong> emissaries<br />

argued that Smith and Cloete had promised to return the cattle, but that<br />

only a hundred had been delivered. They further announced <strong>Mpande's</strong><br />

need for guns and British troops to check Swazi provocations in the north<br />

<strong>of</strong> KwaZulu." The Lieutenant-Govemor Martin West promised the<br />

emissaries that he would ensure no one interposed between the Zulus and<br />

the British. He pleaded ignorance <strong>of</strong> the arrangement regarding Mawa's<br />

cattle, but conceded the necessity to regulate the traders." In August<br />

1847 Mpande sent two <strong>of</strong> his emissaries, Gebhula and Gambushe, to the<br />

Lieutenant-Govemor <strong>of</strong> Natal, Martin West, to advise him <strong>of</strong> the Zulu<br />

intention to occupy the territory between the Thukela and Mzinyathi<br />

(Buffalo) Rivers." Gebhula and Gambushe insisted on the return <strong>of</strong><br />
