Mpande refused to aid either party, but as soon as the troops proved<br />

themselves the strongest he sent messengers to Colonel Cloete to say that<br />

he was about to march against the Voortrekkers. 21 However he<br />

abandoned the project when he was informed not to do so.<br />

In his necessity Colonel Cloete called upon the Zulus living round the bay<br />

to bring him all the horses and cattle they could get, and they, interpreting<br />

this order into a general plundering licence, commenced to ravage the<br />

nearest farms.'" Three Voortrekkers, named Dirk van Rooyen, Theunis<br />

Oosthuizen, and Cornelis van Schalkwyk, were murdered in cold blood.'"<br />

This compelled the Voortrekkers on 15 July 1842 to consent to the<br />

following conditions <strong>of</strong>surrender:<br />

"1. The immediate release <strong>of</strong> all<br />

prisoners, whether soldiers or<br />

civilians.<br />

2. The giving up <strong>of</strong> all cannon, those<br />

taken as well as others, with the<br />

3. The restitution <strong>of</strong> all public and<br />

private property seized and in<br />
