(today Mandeni).41 This is where one ibutho after another was defeated<br />

by the iziGqoza, viz. the Ndabakawombe, Dhlambedlu, isaNgqu, and<br />

iziNgulube. In the meantime, Maphitha, on the left, had caused<br />

Mbuyazi's "right horn" to retreat. Only those warriors unable to keep up<br />

with the rest, were killed by Cetshwayo's Usuthu until various places on<br />

the Thukela were reached. Many iziGqoza tried to escape and were<br />

eventually killed by the Usuthu. 42 The river carried their bodies away to<br />

the sea. Then Cetshwayo caused the ingomane to be sounded. Ingomane<br />

was the noise made by the amabutho beating on their shields with their<br />

assegais. 43 Mbuyazi was killed at Ndondakusuka together with five other<br />

sons <strong>of</strong> Mpande. These were Shonkweni, Mantantashiya, Somklawana,<br />

Mdomba, and Dabulesinye. 44 In fact, Cetshwayo's imbongi bellowed:<br />
