Zulu invasion. He contended that Mpande had no intention <strong>of</strong> invading<br />

the British establishment in Natal' 2 Smith explained:<br />

"If he be treated fairly, his interest is to<br />

maintain an amicable relationship H.63<br />

Nevertheless, West did not receive reinforcements and only half <strong>of</strong> the<br />

73 rd Regiment landed at Port Natal. Late in October 1848 West chided<br />

<strong>Mpande's</strong> emissaries for border violations. He affirmed his pledge to<br />

surrender renegade cattle, but the recent Zulu use <strong>of</strong> force left him with<br />

no alternative but to keep the remaining cattle <strong>of</strong> the recent refugees ....<br />

<strong>Mpande's</strong> emissaries, Gebhula and Gambushe expressed the king's hope<br />

for friendly relations with the British. They argued that Mpande never<br />

intended to invade Natal. Gebhula admitted that armed parties had<br />

crossed into Natal on three occasions, but that this had been done without<br />

<strong>Mpande's</strong> approval. 65 He added that John Shepstone, Sir Theophilus<br />

Shepstone's brother, was a man to whom the Zulu king could tell all his<br />

mind and be sure it would not be perverted. <strong>Mpande's</strong> emissaries<br />
