The Anglican Mission in the Colony <strong>of</strong> Natal and KwaZulu began with<br />

the arrival <strong>of</strong> Bishop John Colenso on 20 May 1855. It could be argued<br />

that this was not their first attempt because in 1835 Capt. Alien F.<br />

Gardiner <strong>of</strong> the Royal Navy, got permission from Dingane to commence<br />

missionary operations. 61 In 1856 Mpande recognised them and the<br />

Church <strong>of</strong> England Mission opened a station on the Umlazi with Dr.<br />

Adams as a missionary. In 1859 it established a station at KwaMagwaza.,<br />

on some <strong>of</strong> the higher branches <strong>of</strong> Umhlathuze, between that and the<br />

Umfolozi, a place which Mpande gave the bishop for that purpose. 62 The<br />

mission also had two other stations - one between the Ilow and<br />

Umkhomazi, near the sea; the other, at Ladysmith, in the northern part <strong>of</strong><br />

the Colony."<br />

The Roman Catholic Mission was situated to the south-west <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Umkhomazi, and formed a centre from where the Roman Catholic,<br />

Dr. M.J.F Allard, and two or three priests were making some efforts to<br />

introduce their faith among the Zulus.... Mpande also permitted them to<br />
