With every right comes a responsibility to use the right fully without exploiting it. Respect the rights<br />

<strong>of</strong> others as you exercise yours. As you read the following pages, keep in mind that respect for<br />

others, cooperation, <strong>and</strong> courtesy go a long way in getting the things you need <strong>and</strong> want.<br />

You have the right to:<br />

Live in a safe, healthy <strong>and</strong> comfortable home where you are treated<br />

with dignity <strong>and</strong> respect.<br />

Be free from physical, sexual or mental abuse.<br />

Be given healthy food <strong>and</strong> adequate clothing, <strong>and</strong> receive medical<br />

<strong>and</strong> dental care.<br />

Contact your family members. Visit <strong>and</strong> contact your brothers <strong>and</strong><br />

sisters.*<br />

Make <strong>and</strong> receive confidential phone calls <strong>and</strong> send or receive<br />

unopened mail.*<br />

Participate in school activities <strong>and</strong> religious services <strong>of</strong> your choice.<br />

Have social contacts outside <strong>of</strong> the foster care system.<br />

Keep your own money <strong>and</strong> have your own bank account.*<br />

Attend Independent Living Skills Programs if you are 16 or older.<br />

Work if you are old enough by state law.<br />

Attend your court hearing <strong>and</strong> speak to the judge. Review your case<br />

plan. Keep your court records confidential.<br />

Contact your social worker or probation <strong>of</strong>ficer, attorney or CASA.<br />

See your social worker or probation <strong>of</strong>ficer once a month.<br />

Make complaints to the <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> Social Services <strong>and</strong> Foster<br />

Care Ombudsperson without punishment.<br />
