Preface<br />

This <strong>IBM</strong>® Redbook provides an introducti<strong>on</strong> to <str<strong>on</strong>g>Advanced</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>POWER</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Virtualizati<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>IBM</strong> <strong>System</strong> <strong>p5</strong> servers.<br />

The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Advanced</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>POWER</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Virtualizati<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> feature is a combinati<strong>on</strong> of hardware and<br />

software that supports and manages the virtual I/O envir<strong>on</strong>ment <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>POWER</str<strong>on</strong>g>5<br />

and <str<strong>on</strong>g>POWER</str<strong>on</strong>g>5+ systems. The main technologies are:<br />

► Virtual Ethernet<br />

► Shared Ethernet Adapter<br />

► Virtual SCSI Server<br />

► Micro-Partiti<strong>on</strong>ing technology<br />

► Partiti<strong>on</strong> Load Manager<br />

The primary benefit of <str<strong>on</strong>g>Advanced</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>POWER</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Virtualizati<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> is to increase overall<br />

utilizati<strong>on</strong> of system resources by allowing <strong>on</strong>ly the required amount of processor<br />

and I/O resource needed by each partiti<strong>on</strong> to be used.<br />

This redbook is also designed to be used as a reference tool for system<br />

administrators who manage servers. It provides detailed instructi<strong>on</strong>s for:<br />

► C<strong>on</strong>figuring and creating partiti<strong>on</strong>s using the HMC<br />

► Installing and c<strong>on</strong>figuring the Virtual I/O Server<br />

► Creating virtual resources for partiti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

► Installing partiti<strong>on</strong>s with virtual resources<br />

While the discussi<strong>on</strong> in this <strong>IBM</strong> Redbook is focused <strong>on</strong> <strong>IBM</strong> <strong>System</strong> <strong>p5</strong><br />

hardware and the AIX® 5L operating system (and it also applies to <strong>IBM</strong><br />

eServer <strong>p5</strong> systems), the basic c<strong>on</strong>cepts can be extended to the i5/OS® and<br />

Linux® operating systems as well as the <strong>IBM</strong> <strong>System</strong> i and platform and<br />

OpenPower editi<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

A basic understanding of logical partiti<strong>on</strong>ing is required.<br />

This publicati<strong>on</strong> is an update of the <strong>IBM</strong> Redbook <str<strong>on</strong>g>Advanced</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>POWER</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Virtualizati<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>IBM</strong> <strong>System</strong> <strong>p5</strong>, SG24-7940 that was published December<br />

2005. It c<strong>on</strong>tains the enhancements in Virtual I/O Server Versi<strong>on</strong> 1.3, as well as<br />

expanding <strong>on</strong> key topics.<br />
