For each Partiti<strong>on</strong> Load Manager V1.1 (5765-G31) license ordered, an order for<br />

either the <strong>on</strong>e-year (5771-PLM) or three-year (5773-PLM) Software Maintenance<br />

(SWMA) must also be submitted. The software maintenance for the Partiti<strong>on</strong><br />

Load Manager is priced <strong>on</strong> a per processor basis, by processor group.<br />

Partiti<strong>on</strong> Load Manager for AIX 5L helps clients to maximize the utilizati<strong>on</strong> of<br />

processor and memory resources <strong>on</strong> the <strong>IBM</strong> <strong>System</strong> p platform that support<br />

dynamic logical partiti<strong>on</strong>ing. Within the c<strong>on</strong>straints of a user-defined policy,<br />

2.4 Micro-Partiti<strong>on</strong>ing introducti<strong>on</strong><br />

Micro-Partiti<strong>on</strong>ing is the ability to divide a physical processor’s computing power<br />

into fracti<strong>on</strong>s of a processing unit and share them am<strong>on</strong>g multiple logical<br />

partiti<strong>on</strong>s. Obtaining and entering an activati<strong>on</strong> code for most <strong>IBM</strong> <strong>System</strong> p<br />

models is opti<strong>on</strong>al, except for the <strong>p5</strong>-590 and <strong>p5</strong>-595 models, where it is included<br />

automatically in the c<strong>on</strong>figurati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The benefit of Micro-Partiti<strong>on</strong>ing is that it allows increased overall utilizati<strong>on</strong> of<br />

CPU resources within the managed system. Better granularity of CPU allocati<strong>on</strong><br />

in a logical partiti<strong>on</strong> means efficient use of processing power.<br />

2.4.1 Shared processor partiti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

abstracti<strong>on</strong> layer that is implemented within the hardware microcode. From an<br />

operating system perspective, a virtual processor is the same as a physical<br />
