4.1.3 High availability for communicati<strong>on</strong> with external networks<br />

In a single Virtual I/O Server c<strong>on</strong>figurati<strong>on</strong>, communicati<strong>on</strong> to external networks<br />

ceases if the Virtual I/O Server is unavailable. VIO clients will experience this<br />

disrupti<strong>on</strong> if it uses the SEA as a means to access the external networks.<br />

Communicati<strong>on</strong> through the SEA is suspended as so<strong>on</strong> as the Virtual I/O Server<br />

goes down, and communicati<strong>on</strong> resumes when the Virtual I/O Server comes up<br />

again. Internal communicati<strong>on</strong> between partiti<strong>on</strong>s through virtual Ethernet<br />

c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong>s can c<strong>on</strong>tinue unaffected while the Virtual I/O Server is unavailable.<br />

VIO clients do not have to be rebooted or otherwise rec<strong>on</strong>figured to resume<br />

communicati<strong>on</strong> through the SEA. Fundamentally, with respect to virtual Ethernet,<br />

the reboot of an Virtual I/O Server with a SEA affects the clients similar to<br />

unplugging and replugging of an uplink of a physical Ethernet switch.<br />

If the temporary failure of communicati<strong>on</strong> with external networks is unacceptable,<br />

more than a single forwarding instance and some functi<strong>on</strong> for failover has to be<br />

implemented.<br />

C<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong>: The Integrated <str<strong>on</strong>g>Virtualizati<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> Manager (IVM) supports a<br />

single Virtual I/O Server, and all physical devices are owned by this Virtual I/O<br />

Server. This secti<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong>ly applies to systems managed by the Hardware<br />

Management C<strong>on</strong>sole (HMC).<br />
