4.7.1 Supported VSCSI c<strong>on</strong>figurati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

This discussi<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> VSCSI c<strong>on</strong>figurati<strong>on</strong>s is a detailed <strong>on</strong>e about supported and<br />

recommended c<strong>on</strong>figurati<strong>on</strong>s when using the Virtual I/O Server. It is a extensi<strong>on</strong><br />

to the discussi<strong>on</strong> in 4.1.1, “Providing higher serviceability with multiple Virtual I/O<br />

Servers” <strong>on</strong> page 182. An understanding of the principles of redundancy and<br />

availability is assumed.<br />

Refer to 2.9, “Virtual SCSI introducti<strong>on</strong>” <strong>on</strong> page 89 for c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong>s when<br />

using logical volumes <strong>on</strong> the Virtual I/O Server as virtual disks for client<br />

partiti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

Supported c<strong>on</strong>figurati<strong>on</strong>s with mirrored VSCSI devices<br />

Figure 4-24 <strong>on</strong> page 239 shows a supported way for mirroring disks with <strong>on</strong>ly<br />

<strong>on</strong>e Virtual I/O Server.<br />

On the Virtual I/O Server, you either c<strong>on</strong>figure two logical volumes and map them<br />

to the vhost adapter assigned to the client partiti<strong>on</strong> or you directly map the hdisks<br />

to the vhost adapter. On the client partiti<strong>on</strong>, the mapped devices will appear as<br />

two disks. The client mirrors the two virtual disks using standard AIX 5L LVM<br />

mirroring.<br />

In Figure 4-24 <strong>on</strong> page 239, disks <strong>on</strong> the Virtual I/O Server are attached to two<br />

separate physical adapters for higher availability. This scenario also works when<br />

the disks are attached to <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e physical adapter, but in this case it does not<br />

protect against adapter failure.<br />
