The sysstat command<br />

The sysstat command tells you briefly about the overall performance of the<br />

system and displays user sessi<strong>on</strong>s. Example 5-41 shows the syntax.<br />

Example 5-41 Usage message of the sysstat command<br />

$ sysstat -h<br />

Usage: sysstat [-l<strong>on</strong>g | -short] [user]<br />

Prints a summary of current system activity.<br />

-l<strong>on</strong>g<br />

Prints the summary in l<strong>on</strong>g form. This is the default.<br />

-short Prints the time of day, amount of time since last system startup,<br />

number of users logged <strong>on</strong>, and number of processes running.<br />

Example 5-42 provides an example output of the sysstat command.<br />

The viostat command<br />

The viostat command can be very helpful in tracing system activity with regard<br />

to questi<strong>on</strong>s related to I/O. It allows for relatively fine-grained measurements of<br />

different type of adapters and attached disks as well as the usage of paths to<br />

redundant attached disks, including virtual adapters and virtual disks as well as<br />

their backing devices.<br />

The usage message of this command is shown below in Example 5-43<br />

$ viostat -h<br />

Usage: viostat [-sys] [-adapter] [-disk | -extdisk | -tty] [-path] [-time]<br />

[PhysicalVolume...] [Interval [Count]]<br />

viostat<br />

Reports Central Processing Unit statistics, asynchr<strong>on</strong>ous input/output,<br />

input/output statistics for entire system, adapters, tty devices,<br />

disks and CD-ROMs.<br />

-sys<br />

A system-header row is displayed followed by a line<br />

of statistics for the entire system. The hostname of<br />
