<strong>Executive</strong> Development and <strong>Coaching</strong><br />
<strong>Executive</strong> development programs are specific events that are<br />
designed to accelerate leadership development in individuals<br />
and teams. <strong>The</strong>y are designed to provide learning experiences of<br />
particular importance to the client’s organization, such as strategic<br />
planning, change management, and team leadership. Clients may<br />
attend programs offered by universities, learning organizations such<br />
as the Center for Creative Leadership, or custom-designed programs<br />
coordinated by some combination of in-house training staff, external<br />
consultants, and educational institutions. Programs may range<br />
in length from one day to several weeks.<br />
Business Events in the 1990s<br />
Prior to the 1990s, it was commonplace for executives to take one<br />
or two weeks out of the office to attend an offsite training program.<br />
<strong>The</strong> idea was that executive development took place when the individual<br />
had the opportunity to study in a classroom setting with<br />
peers. <strong>The</strong> notion was similar to the experience of going away to<br />
college: management principles were best learned without the distractions<br />
of the mundane, everyday issues that arose in the office.<br />
Effective learning took place outside the office.<br />
However, new pressures arose during the 1990s as businesses<br />
downsized. Influenced by business events in the 1990s, research<br />
on adult learning, and the effectiveness of coaching in long-term<br />
